I have bought some runner bean plants and my hubby is digging a trench and is going to put the canes up, is it 1 plant per cane or can you put 2 to each cane?

Hi Suzan, this is not going to be of much help I fear. I plant a one per cane but there again I grow in pots. There are lots of grapes who plant two per cane and get good results.

I'm a one per caner. If you are making a wigwam or a line of two canes, don't tie them right at the top as the plants will grow up and become all jumbled up at the top and it will be difficult to find the beans. Tie the canes about two thirds of the way up (or one third of the way down).
That way the structure is steady and the plants will open out towards the top making finding beans a bit easier. Cheers, Tony.Semper in Excrementem Altitvdo Solvs Varivs.

I'm trying a 'one sided' row of canes this year. Think double row of angled canes, then take the second row out. The row is supported at the ends and periodically along the length.
The idea is to allow the beans to be visable as they hang off the canes and to use the ground at the base for courgettes.
The canes are spaced at about 6" and I'll put one plant against each. Watch this space.Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

I am a one plant per cane up a mumty frame this year, but previous years have seen me do an A Frame. If you put too many up single canes and don't have adequate support, you could end up with them sideways or on the floor. No need to dig a trench, just a planting hole a couple of inches deep.
I do wigwams, four canes 18" apart, then a plant up each cane. In between the canes I put another plant which is trained up a string. I sow three per cane, with a view to leaving two to come up each cane. 5 canes per wigwam (did used to do 7, but I'm running short this year). If all three germinate and survive, then I'll thin one out

I do two per cane, on the assumption that I will lose some of them (I plant direct into the ground).
This year we are trying the supports (hazel) straight up. I have triangular beds, so the supports go up the middle of one bed and then down two sides, creating a triangle that is supported by a hazel limb across the top of each cane. The idea is that this may be easier when it comes to harvesting - but I'll have to let you know on that one!

Runner beans to put it mildly are very growthy and one plant per cane is ample although as others have said one can can cope with more than one.Comment
