  • Mushroom compost and soil help

    Hi all,

As my first bed is nearly finally dug - I'm thinking of acquiring some mushroom compost to dig in to improve the soil. I have a few questions:

    1. Am I right in thinking mushroom compost includes lime? My soil is acidic - will it contain enough for me to not need to add lime separately / will I do harm if I add lime separately?
    2. Can it be used to earth up potatoes?
    3. Can it be used to mulch asparagus and raspberries?
    4. Are there any veg I should avoid planting once I've dug it in?
    5. Will it actually add nutrients or just improve the texture?
    6. How long after digging it in can I start to sow / plant in it?

Thanks in advance - every time I think I know what I'm doing...

Thanks GL - there seems to be a lot of conflicting information! I think I'll be fairly reserved with the amount I add and add lots of compost as well - hopefully bringing it slightly more neutral without affecting the nutrient levels too much.

Rain has stopped play on digging today anyway!

Never used it myself but my neighbour got a lot and dug it in or laid it on top. Actually seemed to do very little, except cause a few mushrooms to appear for a couple of years.

Any reason to reduce the Ph of the soil?

Hi Kirk, its currently very acidic so I was trying to bring it closer to neutral

I always use it on my brassica beds and I think it's great - we have acid soil here too.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
               though...
