    How soon to move seedlings?

    Once germinated how long should you wait before moving to cold frame or greenhouse?

    I know toms can't go out there yet but what about caulis, flower seedlings, cabbage, non-meditteranean things?

      I've sown onions, carrots, turnips and spinach in their final containers, germinated them inside, around 14 degrees, and then put them out in the cold greenhouse, just as they were begining to show through. I didn't keep them in because of light levels and they didn't get used to being in the warm. They look fine, I've just been covering with fleece at night, and leaving it on for the days when the temp was still below freezing. They got through the snow OK but it wasn't too bad here. I'm trying out early sowings to see how they do in the greenhouse. If it doesn't work I've just wasted a few seeds and I'm enjoying trying anyway

        It's very cold in the greenhouse but not frozen. The cold frame seems warmer somehow, maybe cos it's on the decking?
        The peach tree is in the greenhouse but covered on fleece just in case it gets too cold.

          It's very cold just now Janeyo. If you can put off moving them to the cold greenhouse until this really cold weather is over I would.
          The seedligs might survive it allright and look fine but if they get checked with the cold they will stand still for weeks - or might never grow on. I think that's what happened to my celeriac last year.

            I will wait a bit longer for the weeny ones. I am running out of space indoors and really want to sow some flower seeds.

            Patience is the key! (and hoping the children don't knock anything off the window-sills in the meantime.

              That's what OH tells me when I poke the seed tray trying to see if the seeds germinated!
