  • How can I improve soil in pots quickly?

Well, this year I am going to try and plant some winter crops in my potato pots rather than have them standing empty overwinter and in the hope of having a winter crop. Admittedly it is probably a bit late (seeds will arrive this week some time) so hoping for good weather to get them started quickly. Will be getting some broccoli (sprouting) rudolph seeds, some carrots (ideal), beetroot (golden burpee), turnip tokyo and some mizuna.

Trouble is that the soil in the potato pots is getting a bit, well, used. What is a quick way to get some nutrients back into the soil (if there is one) that will also allow me to plant these various seeds or seedlings into it as fast as I can or am I doomed!

I'm no expert but you could try what we've been doing with our grow bags etc this year. we've sifted them through to remove a lot of the roots etc and then added chicken pellet fertiliser to give it a boost. We just found we were buying so much compost and at the same time having to find somewhere for used growbags - contents of potato bags etc that it was worth trying.

Thanks - how much roughly did you add to it? I have nowhere at all I can put old compost, so it is a case of recycling or taking it down the dump, which seems a waste somehow! Still got four growbags from last year's grey mould extravaganza to get rid of somehow so don't want to add to it!
