  • Flower buckets or alternatively cheap containers

    Hi,

Second time poster (first was on an account I created with the wrong name ), long time lurker.

While I was reading the forums I stumbled upon various posts mentioning flower buckets. The general consensus was you could get them from Morrisons 8+ for 99p or local florists

I asked a few local florists on Saturday, presuming they would have a lot of spare buckets due to Mothers day. However I was told they no longer sold/gaveway the buckets as the supplier requested they are returned and must match the numbers they supplied.
Next stop was my local Morrisons (Buxton, its fairly small but decent size) yesterday and I was told the same story.

All my local supermarkets are fairly small and the larger ones are about 45 minutes away. There are a fairly large number of florists, but again they are all small ones.

Is there a knack to finding a store which sells them?
If anyone knows of any florists or supermarkets which do sell the flower buckets near Leek, Buxton or Ashbourne (I live in the middle about equal distance from them all) I would love it if they could PM me.

Alternatively are there any other cheap container sources I can be on the look out for?
I've got some pallet wood troughs, but they are too heavy to move once loaded and wet. So ideally no more then about 2 or 3 foot wide.

For anyone wondering why I'm looking for containers; we 8 chickens which ravage the garden and only a non-heated greenhouse (looking at getting another) and hanging baskets which is growable. I'm looking at creating a chicken free zone (will take a while as its has to be able to cope with 40mph+ winds) for more veg so want something moveable. At the same time large enough for the likes of dwarf broad beans, carrots, chilis, etc.

    Thanks in advance,

    Joe

Ps sorry for the ton of text for such a simple question I got a little carried away and didn't want to miss out anything which might be important.

Wouldn't it be easier to contain the chickens, rather than contain the garden?

Good point there TS,plus you would need to make some sort of raised structure to put the buckets on that the chooks could not perch on.

If it's just for a season or two, those woven 'veg bags' will probably do, and you can pick them up from Poundstretcher and the bigger supermarkets for not too much. Also traditional 'patio pots' don't cost too much from the same and places like B&M HomeBargains etc. Also worth a look in Aldi/Lidl if you have one nearby.

Don't forget Asda/Tesco/Sainsbury/Waitrose on your quest for flower buckets too.

Hi Joe. Asda seems to be the best bet for flower buckets.

Wow thanks for all the replies.

Originally we had a run for the chickens, but once the numbers increased (we had nearly 20 at one point ) there wasn't enough room for them. The coop only has about 3m2 of grass next to them.
Plus they are my sisters (7 of us in our house) and her daughter loves watching them in the garden.
Really the coop is in a bad location and can't be moved, well easily and until summer.

I like the idea of using the bags, I'll keep an eye out for them.

Looks like I'll just have to keep asking and hoping.

I'm not understanding why it has to be mobile: and why the veg patch can't just be fenced off?

The chickens are going to eat anything you plant in flower buckets, if they can reach them.

                Hi Joe and welcome.

Tesco sell the buckets your after don't know whether they will have any in yet.

Buxton is only a Tesco Express so ring first to find out if they have any in 01298 26821.

If no Whaley Bridge has a Tesco super store and they will have them maybe now maybe later in the year.

So you must be somewhere up on the Ashbourne Rd, bit wild and windy up there, difficult growing conditions.

I married a Buxton girl and lived up there back in the late 60s so have a good idea what the weather can be like.

Last time I was up your way was to say goodbye to Geoff the landlord of the Bull on Fairfield Rd, what a night that was.

Good to have you on board mate.
