  • Broad bean joy!

Just wanted to share my joy with you all!
My November planted broad beans are just poking their lovely little heads out, Hoorah! I nearly jumped for joy when I saw them, had presumed the mice or wet weather had, had them!
Imagination is everything, it is a preview of what is to become.

congratulations lainey lou! I had a jumping for joy moment this week too when some of my pot grown garlic started poking their heads through the soil after 2 weeks! Can't wait till i can get planting everything else!

I have to keep going outside to count mine! They're saved broad bean seeds and I was a bit dubious about how many would germinate, so I put 2 in each pot.

Most of them have come up, and I think I'll just plant the pot out with both in, but a bit further spaced than if it was just one, (if that makes sense!) unless anyone thinks that's a bad idea?

See, now I wish I'd sown broad beans - even if no-on likes them apart from me!

Well done lainey! I hope that feeling never goes away when you see things sprouting - really excited.

Nobody likes them in my house either, but I grow them just so I can eat them raw while I'm pottering.

Isn't it the best when things start to sprout? It's all going to take off soon!

No, I don't like them either. The family call them "boiled 'orribles" .

I sewed my broad bean seeds under cloches in November last year, and they are about two feet tall now!

I'm worried that they are too tall and wondered if I should pinch them out to about half height? What does everyone think? Will I lose all my early beans? Or will they benefit from some radical hairdressing??

                            HI Becki,
don't think your s'posed to pinch out until you get the first flowers (anyone?), however, you might want to support them with some sticks or something. Two feet tall eh? Mine are about 3/4 inches! Still I'm proud as any Mum could be!

Well, not that I have a clue what I'm talking about (so listen to the others not me, so why am I rabbiting on ... because I cant resist talking about growing things ) - but I love broadies and being stuck for space last year grew them far too close together, but they all did fine and I had a great crop from them. They were up a big metal totem thingy, mixed in with sweet peas, and about 3" apart (I know, I know!!) but gave me a great crop, with no pests or diseases or nasties of any kind. So I would say that someone with your obvious talent Hazel ( ) will have no probs doing them in pairs. Phew, hope that all made at least some sense?!
