  • Aphids!!!

I brought my plants inside the other evening to find my rocket covered in green aphids ! Have been running my fingers over the leaves with water and washing up liquid to get them off but then noticed today my gorgeous Rose climber was also covered - with White fly as well as green . Have sprayed with suitable spray but really where did they come from in the space of 24 hours ??! Anything to do with the wind ? And could they migrate to the nearby courgette plants?

Greenfly adults have wings and can indeed fly or be blown to other plants. They prefer soft lush new growth, like the tips of roses (so don't cosset your plants and don't over-feed them). They are easy to wipe off and you don't need to panic or use nasty poisons

Keep on top of them. You only need to squish if there are loads of them, the predator insects like ladybirds & hoverflies will help you out. If you annihilate all the aphids you will never attract enough predators, so try to keep a happy balance
