  • Achocha in derby?

    Hey grapes,
I was just wondering if you think I will manage to grow achocha from seed outdoors in derby? I found an old thread and they sound interesting!
Am I right in thinking they are like peppers? We eat loads of peppers but sometimes I get bored with them lol. Thanks people! Hx

I grow them outdoors in East Yorkshire. You need to get them started in May and put ut after the last possible frost - I go for first week in June. I have 3 growing and flowering now along the allotment fence. They don't produce much here till end of august but go on until the frost kils them.

They aren't really like peppers. In fact I don't think they taste of much at all - a bit like a green bean but less so! I love them for bulking out a stir-fry or a stew (I froze lots last year) and they are a great talking point!

Achochas in Fort William (courtesy of seeds from Flummery). I have quite a few baby Achochas already with plenty more to come.

I've grown Achocha's this year (thanks darling Flums ) they are a monster of a plant if you let me have their feet, as it were.

I had to keep beating the one in the green house with a stick to calm him down and make him let go of my Sweet Olive tomatoes and Crystal Lemon cucumbers

I think (as does Snowdrop) that they taste a bit like a cucumber with a hint of pea. Nice

Dunno what I'm doing wrong; started one off in the GH, planted out in June and it promptly went yellow and died. I keep hearing it's a thug but no sign of that here.

I found one today on the plant....it's not doing much in all honesty. I have yet to find another. When I do you can come round and see it if you want
