  • Late Sowing Of Peas

Being a novice vegetable grower can anyone tell me if I sow peas now will I get an autumn crop to harvest? The peas I have available are Early Onward. I know they say that they can be sown up to and including June but is worth trying a sowing now?

Its no good asking me because my answer is always the same!!
Try it and see what happens. You won't be picking any peas if you leave them in the packet.
PS, I sowed Bijou mangetout a couple of weeks ago, I'm sure I'll be picking them before winter

There’s nothing like a confidence boost from the expert. As you say nothing ventured nothing gained.

The only thing I'm expert as is making up the rules as I go along.
I'm sure someone who KNOWS will be along soon

You might be all right with early (short growing season) varieties if you have plenty of sunshine in your garden. Last year I sowed Terrain (a late variety) on 30th July, thinking I had plenty of time, but because the sun disappears from my garden very quickly once the days start to shorten, the plants flowered but the peas never really ripened.

I've always been one for making up the rules as I go along. If what I do fails I don't do it that way next time. You have to be laid back about things. 20 years in the Fire Service taught me that.

Learning by your own experience is the best way, I've found.

I've got plenty of seeds and a bit of space I tend to give seeds a go.

I've always got some on the go for the shoots for my salad, but might let them grow on and see what happens. We're very fond of pompiers on this Forum

Blimey, we never had firefighters like that in my day. If we had I would have refused to retire! All we had was a lot of big hairy blokes (not me of course I was refined ). Ahhhhhh how to make an old man feel really happy!

                        Best regards,

                          Late Sowing Of Peas

I sowed a row of peas yesterday in one of my raised beds having removed the last of my early cabbages. I checked the peas this morning but they haven’t grown yet!

You mention Pompiers. I had an association with a fire station in South West France back in the day. What a lovely bunch of chaps they were.

                          Best regards,
