  • New Raspberry Canes

Just about to order some raspberry canes for the first time. Just wondering, if i plant them this spring when would a first semi-decent crop be likely?
    Thanks

Summer fruiting Rasps grow on last years growth whereas Autumn fruiting Rasps grow on the current years growth so if it was me, I would go for an Autumn cropping variety namely JoanJ..........no guarantees but you may get some this year..........it all depends on the quality of the canes.

Joan J is the variety i got, after getting advice on here! But there is just one sorry looking stem per cane / plant. Are you sure that will grow something this year - that is why i was asking lol!

You won't be saying that when all the new shoots spring up from the root system,in a few weeks time, thats how raspberry plants arrive, your new shoots will grow and give you some this year, but next year you will have loads, also them sorry looking canes,WILL give a few fruits earlier, some peeps, cut em down to the ground,so the new roots have all the energy for the first year.

I felt like that, emarisa, when I first got raspberry canes (Glen Ample). They didn't put growth on for ages and everyone on here assured me all would be well and so it proved to be! Loads and loads of quite big fruit in the first season.

I have just been down to check my Joanj canes. The ones I cut down to 4ft have all got new buds on them for an early crop. Some of the canes I pulled up, cut down to around 1ft & transplanted are slowly showing signs of growth but not to the extent of the established canes.

I planted JJ on Saturday/Sunday in loads of well rotted manure, they haven't fruited yet.
Feed the soil, not the plants.
