  • Wisteria pruning

When is the best time to heard prun wisteria?
It has to be a head prun because it's gone over the gate way and is now making its way up over the roof (under the roof tiles ). It has just finished flowering so I wasn't sure if now was a good time to do it, so it can recover a bit before winter?

I always prune Wisteria like this
In August/September cut back all this years long whippy growth to about a foot. Then have a look and see the general shape. If there's obviously a lump you want rid of...cut it back to a big/ger branch.

Then in February have another chop at the shoots you have already trimmed, cut them to about 2 or 3 buds. The fat ones are the flower buds so leave 4 if they are fat - more flowers
Any new long shoots should also be cut back to about 8 inches.

      Thanks Thelma
Unfortunately I am going to have to attack some of the bigger branches as well.
This is what it looks like now.

Someone has spent years training it over the gateway and along the wall. Now they want it to just go along the wall.

That comes under the "If there's obviously a lump you want rid of...cut it back to a big/ger branch.
        " bit lol.
If you prune the wall growth now, rather than later, then you'll probably have quite a lot of regrowth by Feb, which you'll still need to prune back to 2 or 3 buds as I said.
        Good luck.

I think they are thugs of plants! I can't control mine and I stick to the same rules as Thelma but if there's some bits that are going up under the tiles, trying to get in the house or just getting out of control I'll just chop them off!
