  • When should I plant out my module sown beetroot?

    Hi all,

As per thread title, how big do you grow your beetroot in their modules before planting them out?

    Thanks

I grow a combination of modular sown and direct sown and once the ones in modules are big enough to handle out they go, the leaves on mine are about 2" long so probably next week

Thanks, mine are only about an inch long so I'll wait a bit. I'm getting impatient though!

I'm also going to direct sow a square (SFG) tomorrow. I did a half square of tape today. I love beetroot.

Slugs seem to love me beetroot seedlings so I try and grow them so they arent tiny

Did my first tray today, surrounded with coffee grounds as slugs and snails hate it, and it's a good fertiliser anyway

Already planted some of mine but I grow in pots, troughs etc. tbh I don't find slugs a problem , they go for everything else.

Thankfully, and due to our deep gravel paths, we don't have a slug problem, I think that I'll give the module plants another week and then possibly plant out. I'll harden off obviously.

I'll direct sow some tomorrow. Our radishes are looking fab, I can see bright pink little radishes forming, it's so exciting!

Beetroot are hardy as out. I left some of mine in troughs through winter and pulled them in February .

I sow mine in newspaper pots then plant them out once they've got a few leaves then hopefully the plant will survive even when the slugs have had a nibble.

It's not just slugs that like them over here, sparrows go nuts over the leaves. Am going to have to net them till they are much bigger!

Mine have all just gone out - leaves at about 2in long, Crapaudine and Egyptian, both new to me so am looking forward to tasting.

Thanks - that's answered a question for me!
Guess what I'll be doing today ~~~ no prizes ~~~ planting out into my SFG bed some module grown beetroot - they're quite a decent size - 4" so hopefully they'll be ok to go out now!
