  • long carrots

I would like to try growing some long carrots this year.

Google only reveals new red intermediate as a good contender, but these seeds seem hard to come buy (unless I pay silly money).

Obviously I want to sow these straight away!!!

Can anybody please recommend an alternate variety that is EASY to acquire?

    Thank you

Isn't Sweet Candle the one that is grown for show and they get a good length?
I was going to try some but decided against the effort.
You can get Sweet Candle at Moreveg at £1:25 for 150 seeds, althiough there is postage on that of about the same cost.

Is the idea to grow in drain pipes with a compost+sand mixture, or are you thinking of a deep barrel?
My reason for not bothering was getting 6 to 8 decent lengths of drain pipe at not too great a cost.
MV have a fair few carrots on thier site but I have little idea of which are long, cannot see Red Intermediate, there is one called Vita Longa - guessing Longa is the long aspect.

I grew sweet candle last year actually, and I achieved carrots around 10 inches long, but I want bigger ones!!!

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
