  • New Rules

Our site is becoming very busy now and I feel it's time we updated our 1958 rule book!
I would very much like your views and ideas on rules for plot holders.

We are not a council run site... so can choose our own path to an extent!

    Many thanks

      OOOh a clean slate!!!
Bet you end up with about 90% of the old rules though!!!
One thing which does seem to be frequently raised is how to deal with plots which are semi-abandoned.
      Bonfires.
      Security.
Contact numbers for the committee ( both ways)
Shading of neighbours plots ( trees, sheds etc)
Well defined boundaries and tresspass (cutting across plots as a short cut.
      Animals/bees which may be kept.
      Parking.

      Just for starters!!
Bet Nick could give you some good pointers too!

thanks folks, I have come up with a few....
All water butts must be securely covered (kiddies) thing is I could get carried away and I don't really want to do that. Just good logical rules.
We seem to have huge problems with people just walking out of their plot, leaving a dreadful mess...how to get round this, I am not sure- we dont want to ask for a deposit, but might be the only way!
Bonfires- had not thought of that-good one Nicos!
        Farmer G...nice one too!

          Hi

We have a new rule this year, if someone is taking on a new allotment and it is in a mess and needs clearing, then the person gets the first year free.

How about all children must be chained to a stake on their parents plot and not allowed to wander around the site.

I think what is a good ule and I wish we had it at ou allotment, when someone gets a plot and it is really overgrown, the council men should come and help clear it, I think it would promote more people having allotments. Also there should be correct and safe pathways and boundaries.

How about not playing radios loudly? This really bugs me as I go to the allotment for peace and quiet. One of the plotholders who is there once in a blue moon thank goodness combines an unruly child who messes about on the allotments, including mine and she parks her car on the allotment path and turns the car radio on...

                    No butts, but....

I knew a site which has a rule which stated all sheds and greenhouses must have a water collection system fitted (ie water butts) or the shed and greenhouses must be removed.

                    Stiff, but effective.

As someone on a long allotment waiting list who can see untended plots left, right and centre, my rule would have to be 'use it or lose it'! I'm not talking about regulars who have health problems/unexpected commitments or whatever (there should be leeway) but the folk who sign up then do nothing need to be shown the door asap!

I was turned down after I applied for another allotment - the reason being there is now a waiting list, well fair enough, that was back in February, April came and the rent demands went out and so I thought that the weed infested plots that virtually surround mine will be taken and there will be less weeds etc etc and that the people who don't do anything will be turfed off etc etc
Now they are still empty, and the do-nothings are still doing nothing, I queried this with the allotment secretary and he said it will take the council till October to work out who hasn't paid and who has paid but is doing nothing etc and then they might let the plots... That's hard on the waiting list people as they've lost a whole season.

In February the local newspaper carried a lead feature on allotments, the headline being Use it or lose it!

Sue, I think if that was me, I'd spread some black plastic sheets over the bits of adjacent plots to mine and use the extra space for container growing. If anyone complained, the containers can be easilly moved and you're helping anyway by stifling the weeds. If nobody else wants it, you use it!
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

                              Hello,

I'm about to move allotments to one closer to home (clean slate but, watch me make the same mistakes ) anyway, the one I'm going to has a rule about 30% needs to be worked in the first 3 months and 75% over the next year.

I'm not sure how strict they are but, they seem to move people through the waiting list pretty quickly.
