  • Just a Lidl experiment

Whilst in the afor mentioned cheap German supermarket I came across a basket of single bulb garlic containing 10 bulbs for £1.50

I've seen on here that apparently growing garlic from single bulb (one that didn't split the following season) produces larger bulbs when planted the following season.

These bulbs are originally from China and the variety isn't known.

Will I be stark raving mad planting these and seeing if this does in fact grow larger garlic? Or should I just eat them?

I would give it a go, or you could plant half and eat the other half. If you don't try you will never know!

        I'd plant them out too!

I would be reluctant to plant something from so far away - it may bring unknown bacteria, diseases or pests, plus you don't know what treatments it recieved during growth/export.

But I'm biased against food miles etc so you're probably better off following the more measured advice above

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
