  • Slugs - 2015

We've hardly had any slugs this year

    Anyone else experiencing this?

Possible reasons are there are 2 pair of robins and some blackbirds that have regularly been coming into the garden.

I've got lots of slugs if you want some.

I read the title and just got the "jaws" theme tune in my head....

Very few so far on the allotment, but it's new to us, so I don't know how usual that is. Plenty of mammoth snails in the garden, but not many slugs that I've seen.

Loads here too. I've just put nematodes in my polytunnel because they seem to think it is a luxury buffet. It's the first time I've used nematodes so it's fingers-crossed time.

The most I've seen so far are diddy ones in my old plant pots.
Yup- I know, I should really wash them out before putting them away for the winter!

So now you need to collect the slugs from your polytunnel which have now been infected and breed your own nematodes to continue the treatment.

P.s. I saw the title and started singing "Our House" - I must have missed the"L". Then I thought of Stephen King.

I have been surprised at the lack of slugs in my raised beds this year.

The ones on the edge of my plot have had a few large black slugs coming over for a munch, presumably because I haven't strimmed the grass back right nest to the beds, but apart from that there have been surprisingly few considering the amount of cool wet weather we have been having.

I have pelleted as normal, and the tell-tale trails in the morning have been few and far between, and there has been very little damage.

Maybe it's the calm before the storm?

Much reduced here, too, after five years of slug hell.
Only collecting fifty to a hundred a couple of nights a week now, thanks to birds, mulch, hedgehogs, glow worms, toads, frogs, marbled newts all moving into the plot.

Hardly any. It's very odd. Last year I had hundreds and hundreds. I'm not complaining.

Not many here either. The ones there was on my patio, I waited until late one night and went out and sprinkled them with salt. them removed the bodies the next day. Since then nothing really.

I have slugs. Put the pellets down as not worried about being organic. I have also been going out at night and caught a few. I have a friendly toad so hoping he will help. My lettuce and spinach have been nibbled on the edges. I think there maybe some caterpillars but not seen them so it might just be the slugs.

Not many here either. Very few of the seedling I put out are munched, with the exception of every single cornflower, which are now all stumps.

The ones I have seen (and are now ex-slugs) are mostly very small. Nothing like last year so far, for which I am grateful!

Got a day off today so Ill be going out shortly to build my defences up before the slugs on their summer campaign lay siege. Ive seen a few so far, couple of caulies have been eaten and one was camping under the carrots but not the swarms of last year only reconnaissance parties so far. But June will be hot and stormy so the weather forecasts say so I expect them soon.

Ill be using a mix of square cut stone blocks and old roof slates as walls to hold back slugs and long grass, with copper tape and beer traps dotted about, its a bit like the siege of Constantinople with the slugs as the Ottoman Turks.

Does anyone have any other non-chemical tricks to hold them back? Ive read vegetable oil spray on here I think, mostly use olive oil but may buy some cheap veggie stuff next time Im at the shops.
