    What can be planted and whats to late ?

    After a long wait and turning down one plot i think i may get my first plot tomorrow ,its been along wait since 2008

    But i want to make the most of the plot this year and wanted to know what can still be sown ?

    I have courgettes ,broad beans ,toms, chillis,herbs and lettuces going at the moment in the conservatory,so they will be moved over but i want to make the most of the plot really and wondered what people recommended ?

    Places are selling seed potatoes off cheap at the moment, you'll still get a crop this year if you get them in soon. The ground doesn't need a lot of preparation, either!

      Beans, peas, courgettes, squashes, brassicas etc.
      Still plenty of time to sow. Hope the plot is ready to go and doesn't need a lot of work.

        Saw bags of seed tatties yesterday in H0meb@se for £1 instead of £3.99. The ones at the entrance were a bit over-chitted and tangled but inside the store, the spuds were perfect and just right for planting out.

          All the 'successionals' can still be sown....kohl rabi, lettuces, carrots, beetroots e.t.c

          Also, some plants are best sown late June or July....bulb fennel is a good example and so is perpetual spinach, less likely to bolt sown late (or so I've read).

          Now is a good time to sow swedes.

          I've only just got around to sowing my PSB and red cabbage. I figure they've got plenty of time to catch up.

          And I'm still sowing parsnips. It is rather late for them I confess, but I reckon loads of small and tender snips with my Krissmass dinner is as good as a couple of big'uns.

            What do you like eating? That usually points me towards the best stuff for me and most stuff can still be sown, still madly sowing stuff and will be for the next few weeks.

            Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

            Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

              I can't think of anything to add to what has already been suggested but was wondering where Kristens' sowing list for May is as it was coming on nicely.

                K's must be busy with greenhouse potting up, perhaps I too was waiting to see kristen and May list as well. hope she is doing allright.

                  I'm sure she's very busy at this time of year.............the lengths some folk go to to get a mention on the "Absent Friends" thread hey..........

                    Also there are lots of plants in garden centers. I dont consider it cheating (though no so satisfying) to buy small plants if you have missed the boat or are just too busy. Why not let others have all the headaches.

                      I am 100% with you on this! I was late with my beds this year so picked up some that had already been started off in the nursery - not as satisfying as you said but not exactly cheating

                        Same here. Although the danger of garden centre plants of course is that you don't know how well they've been looked after.
                        A tomato plant might look fine, but if its been left without water two or three times, it could well give a very disappointing crop

                          Too late for earlies, but other than that, I wouldn't say it's 'too late' for anything really.

                          The seasons seem to have slid in recent years. I don't see why gardeners shouldn't make use of that. Especially so as there have been some late frosts this spring.

                            Actually I disagree, I would say that earlies or second earlies are ideal because they mature quicker. I'd go for Charlotte if available cheaply.
