Plant Identification. Weed?

    Plant Identification. Weed?

    I have found a few of these in my garden (attachment)... all in different locations, all over the place. I assume they are a weed, but can't identify it, and non of my books shed any light on what it could be. Alternatively it's new growth from some long forgotten perennial. But i can't ever remember seeing it before!

    As the experts, can any of you identify it?

    It looks familiar but I can't quite place it. It looks like the new growth from a lily- except there is no bulb. It also looks a bit like a lysimachia shoot. Sorry not much help. VC will be along in a mo with a confirmed sighting!

      Dunno about confirmed, Wendy, but my first thoughts were Lysimachia (Loosestrife) too. I have loads of Yellow Loosestrife spreading through the garden. Its just emerging now

          I honestly can't remember!

          The problem I face is that this is was a new garden to me last March. And at the time it was nearly empty after years of neglect, so I spent all of last year taking cuttings and plant donations to supplement the things I purchased and lost track of it all! I'm a veg grower at heart and spent my nose in the dirt building raised beds/sheds/ a greenhosue etc and completely ignored part of the garden.

          If anyone donated it in that location it'll be my dad. I've popped him a text to check to see if he gave me any Lysimachia. I'll confirm as soon as I hear back.

            Haha. Hilariously I sent my dad a pic earlier and he said it was probably a weed, and to burn it. I just got this email response after i texted him...

            "Well done. It is loosestrife. I thought it looked familiar and we have lots coming through too. I did give you some last year and it will grow to about 2 feet tall with long yellow spires. It is easy to pull up and forget about the roots growing from small pieces because it is easy to maintain. Go to the top of the gardening class and I get a kick up the ar*e. Thin it as much as you want or transplant…..it is a great garden plant.

            Just going to bury my head in a pile of compost in shame.            "

            So according to my dad WendyC and veggichicken go to the top of the class! Well done guys.

              Tell your Dad I try to offload bits of it on unsuspecting people too

              Actually, I like it, but in moderation. I have 3 varieties, the common yellow one, one with a variegated leaf and another with purple leaves (Lysimachia Firecracker). Neither of the latter 2 are invasive, so I don't give them away

                He's right about it being a nice plant though. Reasonably well behaved (doesn't seed everywhere), a nice fresh yellow flower, tough as old boots.
