    Seed envelopes made from old till receipts question.

    Hi all
    I like to reuse what I can and this year I have started to use old till receipts folded into envelopes to hold collected seed.

    A quick question, if the seeds are stored correctly in a dry and cool area does anyone know if the paper or print used on everyday till receipts will harm the seeds inside. Strange question I know but would be a shame to have saved the seeds only to find next year they were damaged by the paper or print on the till receipts.

    Good idea rootball, I can't imagine any problems from the ink............Like owt else, there's only one way to find out.........

      We use pages of old books which would otherwise be sent to the tip.

      Not seen any probs so far, but I can understand your concern...I'd never given it a second thought!

        There will be more harmful things in your garden and mucky fingers than a till receipt, I wouldn't worry at all

          Bigmallly you are quite right, I think half in foil and half in till receipt envelopes and see what happens next year.
          Nicos thanks for the info, I guess old books and till receipts are much the same so I will find out next year

            Have here'd said news paper ink is not harmful,as it is a vegetable dye,maybe till receipts are to,

              Well, I commend your enterprise, but I've always kept the envelopes from junk mail - first put the seeds in a fold of newspaper, to stop them getting out and then inside your free envelope and write the name and date of harvest.
              It's probably teaching you to suck eggs - but I always like to store my seeds in one box in month of sowing order, for repeat sowings just put them back in next month's section.
              I dip my old till receipts in water screw them up and add them to the compost bin - too mean to pay for a shredder !

                i buy bread and the like from a little local bakery and save all the paper bags for seed saving. Works well for me.

                  I use old envelopes, the large A4 brown ones particularly, as I can stuff a whole plant's seed head into them and let them dry and the seeds fall out.

                  I keep all the little fold-over translucent packets that I get. Rather than writing on them I print a page of names and then cut them out and place them inside the [translucent] envelopes with the name showing through, by not writing on them they remain reusable in future seasons.

                    Please don't use old books for this! Old books could be taken to a local charity shop, or local church / scouts / guides for their jumble sales.

                    (Sorry, for the mini rant.... I LIKE books. It's such a civilised invention)

                    Having said the above I LIKE the idea in principle. So I will have a go at that but I WON'T be using old books. I think the (now crappy and useless) Yellow Pages might come in useful after all :-)

                      If you have any pages over Damian, don't forget you can make good pots out of them.

                        I've read a lot about using pages / news paper / loo paper etc for making pots. I've also seen quite a few decent Youtube videos showing how to make them.

                        I really like the idea of this, and have even made a few out of curiosity ... wait for it ..... BUT! :

                        1 - how long do these 'pots' last?
                        2 - Do they not go mouldy?
                        3 - Do they fall apart due to being wet? (especially the loo paper ones)

                        I take it BM, from your comment, that you use this method. How do you overcome the above questions?
