  • Need help - New to this!

    Hi guys,

I am new to everything gardening! Currently I am moving from a rented flat into a rented house (which has a garden!). It also has a conservatory.

I would like to start growing some vegetables (like peppers, potatoes and some root vegetables).

Digging up the garden is a no-no but I could put a small/slim greenhouse or two against the fence. Also some big pots etc. I was looking at a bigger green house at one point e.g. 6ft x 6ft. Not huge by any stretch of the imagination - but about all I could get away with until I get my own place.

Does anyone have any advice on choices etc? Or what I could do? I have also seen the mini tiered greenhouses with the plastic covers.

For now, my I have not made up my mind as I would rather here from other people who may have some ideas. I just don't want to get anything that is going to blow away in the wind. It can get quite windy up here in Scotland :P

    Thanks for your help,

    Mark

The grow house's with flex plastic sheeting aren't know as blow aways for nothing. You will need to anchor it down very firmly or else risk loosing it.

        Hello Mark and welcome.
Could you grow peppers in the conservatory? Maybe you don't need a blowaway at all.
Or use a cold frame that you could make from an old window and some timber or bricks.
You can grow lots of veg in Pots, tubs and dustbins too.
Lots of options without digging up the garden

Hello and welcome to the vine Mark, you can still buy tomato and chilli plants from markets/garden centres they would do fine in your conservatory.

            Welcome Mark

Whilst you're searching for chillies and peppers, have a look for plug plants - our local garden centres are bursting with all sorts of goodies

              Thanks guys.

I will use the conservatory for most. But could anyone recommend a cheap glasshouse type building? I like the likes of the lean too's at about £200.

              E.g. Gardman 6ft x 4ft Traditional Aluminium Frame Lean-To Greenhouse £179.99

But I would need one that is the same size but also has a fully covered backing as my fence would have gaps - so not sheltered.

Don't think there are lean-tos with backs - you'd have to make it yourself.
                I've just acquired a lean-to GH off Freecycle - you'd need a high fence - ?7-8' . I've put mine against the house wall.

Thanks guys. THe fence is about 6ft but if it had a back I could brace it to the fence. Which would hopefully stop it blowing away :P

Is there anything else along the lines of what I am looking for?

                    Thanks

Don't know how handy you are but before I had a GH I made my own out of cheap timber and polycarbonate twin wall sheet.
