  • Bottle greenhouse

I'm having a go at making a greenhouse made of 2 litre plastic bottles - the plans look quite easy but the snag is that I need 1,500 bottles to make the thing. In my first week, I've managed 16 bottles... Has anyone made one of these before, and if so, I'd appreciate any tips or ideas on where I might be able to collect bottles. So far I have asked friends, neighbours, freecycle, work, and family!

Where are you going to store 1,600 bottles?

I know these were popular for schools to make in the last few years. Easier for them to collect the required number- and store them! At your current rate you'll be ready to start in January 2016!

I saw these last year and thought they were great.i personally would shrink wrap the entire thing though and probably do tgat every year...your bottles will stay cleaner and it will cut draught out..just my opinion .good luck finding that many identical shaped bottles

The local youth club has one of these on their plot on our site. They did an appeal through the local paper.

What about using social media to request local people to collect them for you - could then arrange for them to be dropped off at a collection point on a particular day? Might also be worth checking with your local recycling centre if you could get some from them to speed up your collecting/building!

If you don't mind looking a bit skanky, you can get loads out of the recycling bins at supermarkets etc - i did that once when i needed loads of tin cans. My girlfriend at the time nearly left me though!

When your area is due a recycling collection, you could drive down the surrounding roads early in the morning (before the council guys turn up), and cherry pick the recycling boxes that have been put out. Like bario said, you might get a few odd looks

**UPDATE** 2 and a half uprights complete, at this rate I'll be finished in 2 years... No one happens to work at a bottle factory do they?

I had a chat with the youth group leader and he advised me that some of the supermarket own brand bottles were not useable for their project because they were too flimsy.

After 3 weeks of collecting, I have about 75 bottles - enough to make 7 whole uprights plus a few left over. If I keep going at this rate, it'll take me 60 weeks to collect the right amount of bottles!
