Seeds or plant plugs

I grow most of my stuff from seed, but sow in celltrays so in effect I grow my own plug plants.

Seed comes from a mixture of sources, some home-saved, some from Wilkinsons, some from local garden centre. I haven't used mail order for ages (tend to spend too much if I do).

I grow from seed but sometimes if things don't go to plan for some reason, plug plants can come to the rescue. There's no need to go without when you can pop to the garden centre. Suttons and Thompson and Morgan have nice catalogues (only two I've ever seen to be honest

)

I agree with both the above with regards to growing from seed and making my own plug plants.

As I grow in containers I find starting my seed in cell trays invaluable to create follow on plants.

You could add Marshalls to the above catalogues . Whilst they are much the same there are some variance's and they are always good for ideas.

I usualy use seeds, except for celery for some reason, I usually get a tray of plugs from the local GC near me.

I prefer seeds too as I can choose the variety, whereas plug plants can be bog standard ones labelled "spring cabbage" or "cauliflower" . However, they're useful as a backup or when they're being sold off cheap

Not to advertise but I like Kings Seeds in general, T&M for the more unusual stuff and DT Browns had some nice varieties at the Edible Garden Show

Plus keep an eye out at Lidl and Aldi because their seeds are priced from 29 pence a packet.

Vegbol I''ve just looked in my journal and the seeds come in around the end of January, they have offers on like 2 packets for 50p so I bought cumbers, courgettes and spinach for a total of 79 pence

I won't recommend any publication as such. Join the National Vegetable Society and gain access to your local District Association where you will get expert advice for free. Additionally you will get 4 quarterly editions of the NVS magazine "Simply Veg" for free as part of your subscription.
