  • quick tip, might sound simple but,,

hi all, iv recently got into gardening and i spent a couple of days carefully pulling the hose around the patches at watering time so that i didnt run the hose over my sweetcorn or toms or whatever, so, most of you probably do this anyway but i thought id share it anyway just incase, i hammered in a thick stick on the corner of every few rows so that i could pull the hose around and it would slide around the stick and not my veg, hope this helps someone

Make sure it is a really thick stick or the health and safety guru's will complain that you could fall and impale, impail - stab yourself.
You could also slip a plastic bottle over the stake to act as a roller, or tin cans.

I knock fence posts in with about four foot of post above ground. Can also be used for draping netting over crops!

I actually carry my garden fork around with me and push this into the corner of the beds as I progress.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Another simple thing I do (and sorry if it comes across as 'teaching your granny to suck eggs') - when planting out crops like toms, broccoli, squash, etc., I build a little circular barrier around them with the soil. Therefore, when it comes to watering - the water stays within the barrier, draining down towards the roots that need it rather than been wasted over the rest of the bed (although, you have to ensure drainage is OK).

I've got netting fences around my 3 beds to keep cats off and they come in handy when watering like Betty says.

Sounds like a recipe for an instant trickle hose..............
