    onion sets dried out

    Hi

    Looking for some advice please.

    I have some centurion onion sets which I set out in modules in my greenhouse in April. They have lovely long green leaves and the roots look really strong and healthy but the bit which used to be the bulb seems to have disappeared/dried out. I thought that it would stay the same and just get bigger.

    Are they okay/is this normal or have they died off and the root and leaves just haven't caught onto that fact? Not sure if it is worth planting them out now or forgetting it this year.

    Sounds to me as if the bulb as used its energy feeding the plant which is the normal course of things.

    Maybe time to get them into new compost or feed them.

      This is the way onion sets normally grow. Nothing to worry about. Get them planted out as soon as possible.

        Asked the same question myself last year. I wrongly thought the set would simply swell to be the onion. Perfectly normal, they need planting out now and will bulb up in good time.

          That's great thank you all very much for your replies.

          I am in the process of planting them out, only 9 left to do in my last bed, but had suddenly had a thought that I had maybe been wasting my time planting them out. Hopefully got some nice onions in the autumn then.

            No they need planting out, there wouldn't be enough food in the modules. And you should have them before autumn, possibly July!
