  • Dalek Compost Bin

    Hi,
My mum wants to give me her compost bin (Don't know why she got it. She hasn't got a garden or keeps many plants/flowers).
I don't have a garden. Just a back yard in which i built a trough for fruit plants.
If i was to take this bin what could i do with it? It doesn't have a bottom to it and the yard floor isn't that even.

Could i put a couple layers of old carpet down and place bin on top?
Does it have to be in sunlight or can a shaded corner be alright?
How would i get it started?

    Thabks

Do you produce much organic waste? (kitchen peelings etc). If not, you might be better off getting yourself a wormery. A dalek takes a lot of filling if you only have the one trough to grow things in

Daleks take up quite a lot of floor space and, as TS says ^^^^, unless you generate a lot of compostable waste its going to take you a long time to fill it. In your position, I'd give the space to a big pot to grow summat in.

        Thanks for replies.
I've started a wormery but don't know if it doing anything.
I think i might need more worms. I only bought 30 because i thought that would be enough for a 24 liter storage box.

When conditions are right, your worms will breed.

No point buying more worms unless you're producing lots of waste.

Take the compost bin and fill full of main crop spuds.

I thought about that Potty, but the top opening is so small that you'd have to lift the bin off to get at the spuds and all the compost would fall out. Could it be used upside down, I wonder?

Mine have low level doors in the sides ideal for having a furtle.
