Beans confusing me, any ideas?

    Beans confusing me, any ideas?

    I planted a tray of yin-yang beans, saved from the plants I grew a few years ago- I was expecting awful germination, as something had managed to get in the jar they were stored in, and ate bits out of a few. But I planted some that looked whole, and 9 from 12 have come up. That's fine, except... only one of them appears to have a leaf. The rest have sprouted up, but if you look inside the two 'bean halves', where the leaf shoot should come from, there's just a little brown stub. It's been over a week, and only that one looks like it's doing anything.

    Is it likely to be something I've done? They're inside on a very sunny windowsill, so I don't think they've been chilled. Could this be a problem with the beans from storage?

    Lastly, is it likely that anything will happen if I leave 'em? I'm very short of windowsill space, so I don't want to keep hopeless cases, but I really would like to grow some.

    If they don't have green leaves I wouldn't worry about keeping them on a windowsill until they do.
    I've no idea whether there's a problem or not - sorry.

      I think something has got at them, if you have no leaves or leading shoot then they're not going to grow into viable plants.

        I don't see how anything could have got at the plants- as I said, they're on the windowsill, (were in a heated prop) and none of my other beans have done this.
        It's also possible they weren't properly ripened, my housemate picked and dried them while I was away, and might not have left them on long enough...

        Maybe I should just chuck the dodgy ones, and plant another lot, and see if I can get any more salveageble plants. They're such pretty beans, I really want to grow some!

              It would be hard to eat a hard bean: 'something' would need powerful jaws, unless you mean there were little holes in the seed: if so, I suspect bean seed fly?

                If there was a shoot from 1 & 2, it aint there now. I'd start chitting some more. I'm interested in the name. Cheers, Tony.

                  Just bumping this out of interest- I've been busy the last few days, and didn't get round to throwing the beans out- and today, I just noticed the tiny green bumpsbetween the 'bean halves' and the main stem, just about visible in the blurry second picture, appear to be growing shoots!

                  Laziness wins again!

                  Oh, and it was some sort of moth et the beans- not neat holes, but chunks out of the side of a few of them. It was dead in the jar when I opened it, by which point it was pretty crispy and not easily identifiable, but it looked very much like a moth.
