    Blueberry from seed?

    Hello all.

    My mate was trying to grow blueberries from seed. Managed to get a bit of germination going on, then they died.

    I stupidly said I'd have a go.

    So, I have some blueberries.

    1. Is there any point?
    2. Obviously, I start by collecting the seed. Anything special I need to do?
    3. Where do I go from there?

    1. No harm in trying.

    2. Maybe not, but I would put at least some of them in the fridge (below 6'C) for a week, then put in the freezer for a fortnight (-15'C), then back in the fridge for a week. This would mimic "winter chill" that is often needed to break dormancy of seeds or even the mature plant. Try some with just the fridge (5'C) treatment and try some with no cold-treatment.
    Then plant in rainwater-wetted ericaceous compost and keep damp but not saturated. I would expect germination within a few weeks.

    3. Wait and see what happens. Revive and update this thread if successful.

      Ok, I'll have a go. Do I just split open the fruit & take the seeds out?

        Or squash the ripe fruit, either way would be fine (discard any split seeds though) - give em a rinse [not sure if you'd need to ferment?]

        A few threads I've just looked at here started but the authors never came back to update, so make sure you do!

        Most of the threads recommend cuttings though (easier, I guess).
