  • do sweet peas go off?

I received some sweet pea seeds from a lovely grape but they are a bit old, I sowed some on my windowsill and it's been 2 weeks now with no sign of them so I'm guessing they have gone off? Is it possible to chit them on kitchen roll like peas/parsnips to check they are still ok?

That's how I started mine off - on damp kitchen roll in a clear plastic takeaway tub. Some took a few days others took a lot longer and even pre chitted they still took a while to show their heads once I'd put them in loo roll pots. I also soaked them first but I don't think that's essential. I'd say two weeks isn't that long really - have a poke about, or empty one of the pots to see if it's germinated.

another good way to start them off is to pop them into a plastic money bag with some damp compost, put them into the airing cupboard - but check them daily because they only take a couple of days to send out the little white shoot
