    I had a theory about tatties..........

    But its been shot down in flames now.

    I experimented with planting larger seed potatoes hopefully to get bigger tatties. With this in mind I planted 3 rows of Desiree spuds with the centre row being BIG potatoes.

    I've just got round to digging a few up, and up til now theres no difference.

    Ah well........experimentations the name of the game, and another theory bites the dust!

    ahhhhh but maybe that's cos you haven't left them as long in the ground as the original ones were

      Bob Flowerdew always tells you to sow the largest of your own spuds, so that you get a bigger crop.

      Doesn't work then, Snadge?

        2 sheds,have you tried any of the pink fir hybrids?They are supposed to have the similar flavour but bigger,smoother tubers.I'm planning to grow Anya,Harlequin,Moulin Rouge as well as PFA,a collection from T&M.

          Also, what happened to the Gardener's World tatty trial to compare chitting versus non-chitting? I hope they let us know the results.

            I thought the GW trial showed that the earlies benefitted but the mains didn't...

            Anyway - my spud trial this year was to plant out some peelings and see what happened. They grew, and I really should tip them out of the pots soon.

            Another job for the weekend.

              I really think it's the luck of the draw. I planted some really manky Arran Pilot seed spuds and got a really good crop from them. Others that looked really good turned out not to give a good crop (sorry can't name varieties - the labels have been trodden in, dug up by cats etc)

                I watched something on the allotment channel the other day, about getting a ton of pototoes from 5 potatoes.
                Apprently the secret is you sow them 5 ft apart, so they 'don't know' there are any more potatoes around.
                I may give it a go when/if I get a larger space.

                    Anya is a well flavoured potato Burnie, but not nearly as good as Pink Fir Apple. Well that's what I think. Do report back on your experiment and tell us what you think.

                      Paul Peacock shows how to plant them 5 feet apart - but doesn't show any actual harvest. I love the idea, but will only be convinced if the result is shown.

                            Jings, who wants a ton of potatoes If there's any truth in this theory we could just plant 1 potato and get 32 stone That would last a while. Amazing what we've been missing, isn't it

                              About the theory, there are too many variables, but the clever ones say, that the larger the seed, the more eyes, so more numerous, smaller tubers.

                              Which doesn't always work like that of course...
