    No-bergines

    See what I did there everyone!

    Can anyone give advice on why I have an aubergine plant that is lush and healthy - but only with leaves and no fruit (or veg - not sure what it is classed as!).

    It is growing in a greenhouse, in half an upturned growbag and I have watered and fed it as per all instruction from gardening books and websites and it has produced the odd small flower but nothing else.

    Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated - thanks guys!

    I'm not sure, but we had 'bergines early July when the weather was hotter and sunnier, but recently with the rain and overcast cooler weather not many have been setting.

      My problem too. This is my 3rd go with aubergines, the first two years the plants were a bit scruffy, but I did get aubergines. This year, beautiful, healthy plants, lots of flowers, but they just drop off and no-bergines it is. On another thread someone suggested misting the plants, which I've been doing, but still no fruit - I feel it's been too cold since they started flowering.
      Life is too short for drama & petty things!
      So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!

        I think the real problem with aubergines is we're outside the climatic zone for them.
        I struggle with them. Growing this year in the conservatory. Have 3 plants and 2 have finally set fruit - but they are tiny. I don't think they will make a worthwhile crop.
        This really is my last attempt. No decent crop this year and I don't plant them again.

          my aubergine hasn't had any flowers either. i had the seeds free with something. it's a mini f1 aubergine. is it worth keeping the plant until next year and hope some fruit comes from that??
          I have dyslexia so please excuse my spelling and grammar

            I've managed one fruit from three plants - all in the greenhouse.

            Lots of pretty flowers but then they go brown and fall off.

              Exactly the same here, grown them for 4 years and had a total of 2 aubergines! Each year I've grown about 5 plants and had lots of lovely flowers then they all go brown and drop off, I give up!!! I'm not going to grow them anymore . I do wish that they were successful but, hey ho!!

                I'm with you Eden. This year was my last shot. I've got a few wee aubergines, but nothing to justify the effort. I can't give them any better conditions than they've had this year so I'm conceding I'm outside the climatic Zone for successful growing.

                  Am thinking of trying a couple of plants in the conservatory next year rather than the greenhouse as I'm not doing very well there - did laugh mind you the other day, noticed that Homebase was still selling plants, complete with a couple of reasonable sized fruits though how you'd get them home without them falling off is anybody's guess!

                  Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

                  Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                    Alice & Eden~I keep saying that too!!~but then early in the year some little voice says "go on!~try again!!We will get a summer this year!"~I just can't help but listen!I've already bought my next years seed!
                    BTW~we've not even got as far as a flower this year!

                        Cheers Alice!!I must report my first flower!!have no high expectations for it but it's progression!!Our lottie neighbour took me into her greenhouse to show off her many aubergines today!As she's only yards away I think i can no more blame the climate!~just my obviously very ungreen fingers!

                          Are aubergines like tomatoes, where they need bees to cross pollinate the flowers in order to get fruits? Mine are on my patio next to a couple of tomato plants which get visited by a friendly neighbourhood bee every evening and I have three aubergines on four plants. Maybe that's it? I vaguely remember my dad telling me to brush the flower heads with a paintbrush if the tomatoes weren't getting visited by bees, or something! Two of my aubergines are only an inch or so though, and may well drop off yet!
