  • marechal foch grape vines

i have just purchased two marechal foch grape vines from morrisons of all places.
i do not know haw old they are but they are about 3-4 foot tall with lots of new growth and leaves and many bunches of small grapes

should i cut off the grapes or leave them

is it still ok for me to re-pot them the now

what is the best food for them

How big are the pots? You should be able to tell if they need potting on if you know them out gently and if they are root bound, repot them.

I'd reduce the small grape bunches by about half, less fruit, better quality according to my chum who grows acres of the things.

thankyou i will be re-potting them as i think they need it

i was not sure how many bunches of grapes to take off but i will certainly be taking half off after your advice

i will be hoping to pick your brains about these as they are from france but i cannot remember just now the area

          Marechal Fock

I was given this vine as a Birthday present today, and being fairly new to gardening would appreciate some direction on its care. I intend to grow it in my new greenhouse.

on my vine some of the medium sized leaves are turning yellow and dropping off
              is this bad?
              what am i doing wrong?
it is only about 6 leaves on each plant but i am getting a little worried

I have also purchaced a Marechal Foch from Morrisons.

I have it in a small greenhouse and it seems happy.

I have grown toms and chillis for years but never grapes so any trimming/growing tips would be appriciated please.

Nomad, are your grapes in a pot in the greenhouse or elsewhere?

I also grabbed one of these. 13monies!! They have replenieshed thier strock too so they must have quite a lot of these. I don't intend on thinning the bunches as I have read that is more for food grape rather than wine ones. We should have a harvest thread later and maybe a wine one if anyone manages to make it. Remember to take lots of piccies of progress! PS I have already re potted mine as the roots seemed constricted. I put it in a pot I use for tom's but may go bugger depending. I heard a podcast thingy saying to keep them indoors untilyou finish your harvestandthemput them outside as they require a harsh winter. Then back indoors after the frost.

They are fine outdoors, I get grapes that are fine to eat every year, small grapes but lots of them, in the winter they are fine with the coldest of temperatures as well

They grow best in the ground, in full sun, I have 2 of them in the UK one in a 100L plant pot and it doesnt like it as much as the one in the ground.

They will grow as big as you let them grow, In a pot or a greenhouse you need to prune them, but put in the soil outdoors they will grow as big as you let them, and there is no need to do careful pruning, more grapes with correct pruning, but after a year or so masses of grapes without pruning

In Bulgaria the gardens a lot bigger so we dont prune them often , and with it being warmer longer they grow a lot more, we have many different vines there , only one of the morrisons ones , it grows so much more over there!, but we just leave them, they grow everywhere and every now and then we take a hedge trimmer to them to cut them back....

This is a picture of another type of vine that everyone grows near Stara Zagora Bulgaria , but this shows how everyone grows them, it seems to work and we are now doing this in the UK , grow one or two main branches up and then let them fill an in the air frame, its like a horrizontal trellis on 2 poles, and the grapes dangle down from it in the dark to keep them out of the sun
