  • Roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa

I'm looking for this plant, Hibiscus sabdariffa, as it makes a great infusion and buying the dry flowers is utterly expensive, so I thought I'd grow my own, plus its quite pretty. I've seen other varieties of hibiscus in plant catalogues, but not this one, so I'm wondering if anyone out there knows where to get it from? Many thanks!

Mmmm, it does make a wonderful infusion, I just love it.
Sorry I don't know where you can get the plant, but this is where I get mine dried....

That's not bad, thanks Lainey! It's cheaper than this Flor De Jamaica - Hibiscus Flower 100g MexGrocer.co.uk Chillies and Chilli Peppers, Hot Sauces and Chile Recipes UK Mexican Food products store , and they sell achiote!

I've just looked it up in RHS Plantfinder, there's only one nursery in the country that stocks it (or at least did in 2003/4) which is

Cheers for that Vicky! I'll give them a call and find out, fingers crossed!

Just got an e-mail back from Salley Gardens, they closed the nursery last year

This thread was from 2008.... I'm sure we're all mighty impressed that you've more than 3.5m seeds, but if you're here to sell them, then you'll be breaking our seed swap rules/guidelines + the forum terms and conditions.

That's great, but the thread is 5 years old and you aren't trying to sell any, are you?

Elfeda, are you growing them outside? Mine turned their leaves up and died.

I planted a few later on in a blowaway but they're so far behind I doubt that they'll flower - I was hoping for home made sorrel at Christmas.

Don't have enough leaves yet to harvest as a veg - don't know any recipes for them if I did but id be happy to give it a try.

When did you sow them? I think I sowed mine late May as the earlier sowing failed to germinate and I had to get more seeds.

I'll try again next year - and the year after but I reckon that if I've had no success by 2029 I may have to call it quits and buy some hibiscus tea
