    Not to be grown list- flowers

    I enjoyed reading the veggie one, but since I mainly grow flowers I thought it may be an idea to set up a similar thread. I'm a newbie so I'm easy tempted by gorgeous catalogues- I want to grow everything

    So what flowers are too difficult to germinate/grow on or just not worth the effort?

    cauli flowers If you talk to Mrs G she'd say roses cos for 11 months of the year they are just twigs but I love em.

      i am looking at my Lisianthus with regret...they've been in ages and not one is even attempting to sprout.

        Petunias... 'Orrible tiny, fiddly seed, seedlings never happy - too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry. The ones I finally managed to nurture to adulthood were soon covered in aphids (while the commercially grown ones in the next pot were virtually untouched) and produced about 2 flowers per plant Think I'll leave them to the experts this year!

            Then you tell us how it should be done ! I feel like biting my fingernails at the prospect of growing 2 different variety petunia from seeds (but I also know I will most likely buy the plants from B&Q ). So why did I buy the damn Petunia seeds...because my ambition is bigger than my actual capabilities .

                Red hot pokers! They are ghastly - look spiky and horrible most of the year and positively septic when in flower.

                        Those petunia seeds you sent me (Rainbow mixed f2) - small (9cm) pot, light sprinkle of seeds, fine covering of vermiculite, into the heated prop 16th Feb, germinated by 23rd Feb. The piccy shows the Rainbow mix top right.

                        The tiny specs of green bottom left are Petunia Reflections F1. They were done differently, not as many seeds, pkt said 'don't cover' and they were not in heated prop - nothing happening after more than 1 week, put them in the heated prop and next day they started coming thru....

                          I have real trouble with Morning Glory (no pun intended!) I've tried 4 years now and are always dissappointing and picky plants, I like the ones that don't need too much tlc.

                            I love the scent of honeysuckle, and usually buy a new one every year, but the slugs, aphids, weather, always seems to do for them before the following spring. I've never yet managed to persuade one to actually flower.
                            Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

                              Never grown a single flowering plant from seed before, so this thread should prove priceless for me!
