  • new bed help

i have just rotorvated a new bed on my plot that was full of weeds , i was going to cover it up for a year with membrain and forget about it but then i wondered if i could still make use of it by planting through the membrain with potatoes and just leave a small hole where the plant will pop through

what i would like to know is would this work ?

it is the membrain that lets water into the soil

It depends what the weeds are. We had a bed like this on our old allotment and I tried this idea. When the couch grass was short of water its roots grew right through the potatoes! You could cut them out and eat the spud but they wouldn't store.

Just a second thought - you could maybe do courgettes, squashes or pumpkins?

Why not try thick black polythene instead of membrain, bury the weeds deep if the rotorvater hasnt already done it plant your spuds then when the spuds try to push through carefully cut the polythene and pull the shoots through. Its worth a go, but them old bind weeds and couch grass are a real pain in the butt
