Any white haricot bean will do although I am sure Heinz use a specific variety. -

Baked beans are Haricot beans. Dried climbing French beans are said to be the same or similar.

Nice thing about doing you own baked beans is you can have any flavour you like, not just tomato.I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!Comment

Not tried growing them yet, but I make my own 'baked' beans with dried haricots. You can put lots of garlic in and sun-dried toms and chopped olives - oh, wipes dribble off keyboard! (And no salt or sugar) Knocks 57 varieties into a cocked hat.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

We tried for 3 years in a row to make tomato ketchup that the kids would eat, never managed to get it right ("It tastes funny.."
) although the grown-ups all loved it! I've given up now, I'm not wasting any more precious tomatoes on those ungrateful blighters!
