  • Hi there

Hi there everyone, I'm a newbie to this forum. I've got an allotment and I'm busy preparing the ground at the moment, and looking forward to growing lots of lovely veg!
I'm new to this game so I hope you won't mind if I pick your brains on a few things from time to time!!

First question! How do you grow sweet potatoes?
    Is it hard?

    All advise welcome

    Thanks

    Hi Lottie and welcome!
Noone minds questions here as long as you don't mind a bit of nonsense!
With sweet potatoes I think you need to obtain "slips" but I'm sure a much more knowledgeable grape will be along shortly who can advice better than i!

Hi there Lottie5...and welcome to the Vine!!!

        Sweet potatoes????
Now there's a good one to start with

Ok- I've never grown them....but know a lass who has!

They are really a veg for warmer climates than ours, so don't expect fantastic results unless we have a very good summer.

Yes, you do need to buy slips ( although I'm sure you could make your own)

          Hi Lottie5 and welcome.
Sorry can't advise on sweet potatoes - couldn't even contemplate trying them this far north, so will leave you in the capable (?) hands of my fellow grapes for that one.
          Glad you're on board though.

Hi Lottie5, you're certainly jumping in at the deep end with Sweet potatoes, not the easiest of things to grow in our climate. Best of luck and welcome to the 'Vine'.

Did a lot of reading on sweet potatoes recently as I plan to grow them here too. The link from Nicos pretty much sums it all up really.
I think we are a bit pessimistic here re the temperatures and conditions required but come the end of the season I may be eating my words. I just can't fathom why they would be sold as suitable for UK conditions of they are that difficult.
Never the less I will do a bit more soil preparation and feeding than I would probably do just to be sure I think.
Maybe we can compare notes later on Lottie5

                      Did someone call?

Welcome aboard Lottie. I've never considered sweet potatoes myself, not sure I could eat enough of them to make it worthwhile. Good luck to you though, keep us posted.
