  • Red malt vinegar for pickling

Is it ok to use? Lidl have it 35 cent a litre, much cheaper than anything I've seen around. 5% acidity. Is it just the appearance that has people using white?
    Thanks

Yep, it's just the look of their pickled onions. After I add my mix of spices to white vinegar, it ends up reddish anyway.

    Cheers, Tony.

You may as well use the dark vinegar on beetroot anyway as the white would discolour. Its usually a lot cheaper than the distilled malt vinegar.

You only really need to use white for light coloured veg or piccalilli type pickles.........

Any vinegar is fine so long as it has at least 6% acidicy/alcohol.

The stuff from Lidls here is 8%. Some receipies call for Cider Vinegar which is only 5%. It's up to you the higher the acidity the better the keeping qualities.

You could always add something acidic too it if its low, such as lemon juice.

Thanks. Dont think it would be for very long storage so will go with that.

My pickled beetroot doesn't make it to the spring let alone the summer.
