    Winter - what action?

    Hi everybody,
    This year I decided for the first time, to try growing a few herbs in a special bed I made and have been rewarded with fresh herbs all summer to enhance certain dishes. I bought sage, rosemary and thyme which were in pots and planted them out. The chives I planted from seed and when well sprouted planted these out too. All grew enormously well and indeed grew larger and faster than anticipated. My question is now that winter is approaching do I cut all these plants down or just let them die down naturally or whatever they do in the winter. Thanks.

    Sage, rosemary and thyme are evergreen so leave them be unless you want to change their shape by pruning out bits. This normally happens when you take bits for cooking anyway.
    Chives die back and will sprout again in spring.
    In other words, do nothing

      Thank you Veggie for your informative and quick reply. Any advice which is to do nothing is great advice lol. Thanks again. The only thing I would say is the rosemary has become quite woody but I guess from what you have said I should take out the more woody bits as a form of pruning or when I want some rosemary for cooking. Glad to hear those old three are evergreen - bonus - fresh herbs all year round.

        You can cut them all back, but don't cut into the old wood as it won't regrow - but you can cut a complete branch out (if that makes sense!).
