I wasn't sure where to post this so Mods please move if needed.

I know many folk use small plastic bottles as cloches, watering funnels & cane toppers but I wanted to try something a little different & came up with this.

Pic 1: I cut the bottom third off to use as the pot leaving 2 thirds for the lid. drainage holes were put in the pot.
Pic 2: I then cut steps out of the lid so it had tabs on each corner.
Pic 3: The lid tabs are then placed on the outside of the pot giving a snug fit.

My theory is that once there is signs of germination, the cap can be unscrewed.
When the seedlings are established, the lid can be removed leaving you with a handy little pot of seedlings to grow on until ready for transplanting. Once transplanted, simply wash the pot & start again. I know a few grapes work with children & maybe could be a little project for them.

Just thought I would give a quick update. It's going pretty well, have already sowed Toms, Chillis, Peppers, Onions & Marigolds which are now under the lights. I currently have more Onions, Toms, Sprouts, Caulis, Turnips, Leeks, Aubergine, Petunias & Calabrese currently in Propbottles. There is room on the heat tray for about 24 bottles. I like this idea as I am not the most patient when it comes to pricking out 50 seedlings so by only doing 6 to 10 at a time it keeps the interest up.

Perhaps an illustration including a seedling would help me to understand better !

Welcome to the vine Robert, there is not a lot to understand. The bottles are cut in half, compost & seeds put in bottom half, top half pushed inside making a little greenhouse & placed on heated tray. At the first sign of germination, the cap is removed & taken off the heat. After signs of growth, the top half of the bottle is removed. Pot on as required.

This is brilliant and I like how you keep you seeds. I have mine in a small tin of Christmas biscuits and it's chaos to have to look for a specific packet!

Ok I was with Robert, I missed something in the first demo, but I got it now!

Seems good to me. Might try that too.
