  • onwards and upwards for 2013

Onion seed sown last weekend. I'm starting much earlier than usual as I find that many of my National Vegetable Society colleagues have started even earlier than this in recent years and if I want to compete, I have to adjust my own methods. I intend having a real go at the under 250 gram class in the NVS Nationals which in 2013 will be in Harrogate. To that end, I've sown Tasco, a variety no longer available but of which I had an old packet of seed and also seed from a good specimen I decided to try to propogate from. Not too sure what I'll get from that because I am aware of the difficulties in trying to propogate from hybrid varieties but it will be interesting. Glad to say that these varieties are already showing signs of germination as are some red baron I decided to start at the same time just to take advantage of the grow box heating and lighting being on. The other variety I've tried to start off is a reselect from a large exhibition onion variety - Ailsae, a cross between Ailsa Craig and The Kelsae Onion. No signs of this one germinating but as it is old seed that may decide not to appear. Plenty of time to resow another variety if that is a failure though.

I'd like onion soup served in a hollowed onion "bowl" with some toasted bread, topped with grilled cheese floating on top. Hurry up with those onions, AP - I'm starving

Does it take a year to ferment Feral?
Do you remember that Friendship cake thingy that was dumped on my doorstep? I couldn't stand the smell of it and it ended up in the compost bin! So much for friends
