  • Wintering lavender

I have (from seed ) 45 lavender plants. They took thier time coming and will not be big enoug to plant out in the autumn, also my garden is not yet ready for them! I was hoping to keep them in the (unheated) greenhouse over the winter and put them out next year. At the moment they are just modules so what size pots should they go into and wiil they be alright in greenhouse?

Isn't lavender hardy? Have some which has been outside without protection for a few years so an unheated greenhouse would be fine.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

It was their size that was concerning me......

keep them in the greenhouse fine, on the dry side (def. not wet). Pot them up gradually, when they need it, ie. don't put them straight from a module into a big old pot.

I got plug plants in the spring. They went into 3.5" and then 5" once they were filling the 3.5". They are going to be planted this autumn.

Stand outside during the summer, pot on if necessary, (gradually - 1 size at a time) and bring back into the unheated greenhouse before the first frosts. Keep dry(ish) and cool and they should be fine. Are you sure they won't be ready to plant out by Autumn?

The garden still needs a lot of work and we will probably have a crane in it sometime before Christmas (big yellow lifting variety - not fishy bird). I would rather put them where they will stay early next summer than try to move them. Some are only 1" tall at the mo anyway!
