Default Stocks - how long do they last?

Sorry for the rather basic question but I am not big into growing flowers. I planted stocks in my front 'garden' and they flowered and were lovely. Should I have dead-headed them? They are now covered in pods so I really need to know if I can leave them to seed the bed or whether I should whip them out and plant something else to flower for the rest of the summer?
