  • Sowing sweet peas

I have just got a load of sweet pea seeds which I'm keen to get going. Am I better to plant them outside in their final position, or bring them on first in the growhouse?

    Thanks!

I planted mine in modules 10 days ago and left them outside. Nothings happened yet so I'm going to put them in the greenhouse and see how they go.

I'll need to keep an eye on this thread to see what everyone else does. Its my first year for these.

I always put mine in root trainers (loo rolls will do) in the cold greenhouse, pinch out the growing tip when they're a few inches tall so they bush out and then plant out later.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I have sown mine (well Madmax did them) in those cardboardy pot thingies, one per cell. they are in the unheated greenhouse and some are through now. They will stay there until I have a place for them to be planted out.

I sow three seeds to a 3" round pot in January. They are about 3" tall now and will go into their final position in April.

I sowed 4 seeds to a 3" square pot, 2 days ago. They're in my unheated porch for now.
This method worked well last year

                      Hi all
Does soaking the seeds overnight make any difference? Will they germinate any quicker?

The theory of overnight soaking is to soften the seed-case. Which presumably is to speed up germination... I've never done it myself though, so I'm not an expert

I sowed mine at the beginning of the month but I'm worried as there is no sign of germination yet. They are outside in my mini greenhouse. Should I try and bring them in or assume the seeds are no good and chuck them out?

I sowed mine a couple of weeks ago in a heated propogator.

They are about 4" tall now and have now been transferred to an unheated greenhouse.

Should I pinch the tips out now? Been a while since I grew any flowers

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
