Rose cuttings..

    Rose cuttings..

    hi, in my front garden, which is north facing, gets no sunlight at all and is prone to flooding!!

    I have a lovely yellow rose, it is only around 14 inches tall, has never got any bigger and struggles to produce one flower a year. When it does flower it is bright yellow with tiny flecks of red and orange, really lovely!

    I'm hoping to take a cutting from it, and locate it in the back garden, in a much better location.

    The bush is very small with only a couple of stems, i have read that I need around 12 inches to get a good cutting, i'm a little worried that i'm going to have to take it down almost to the ground.

    My questions...

    When is it safe to proceed with the cutting?
    Am i likely to kill off the existing bush by taking too much?

    I'd just dig it up (with plenty of root ball) and move it to the back garden. A cutting would take a couple of years to flower.

      I've had rose cuttings that flower the next year - I took some from an ex-boyfriend's plant and it grew really really well on my lotty, but then I was always reminded of him

      Your rose is in a bad place Jonathan and won't thrive, so what have you got to lose? Move it all now. Cuttings are best taken in late summer

        Thanks for the link - I never knew you could take rose cuttings, I thought they were all grafted abit like fruit trees...doh!

          Thanks TS just had a look at that seems I may have done the right thing as I took some rose cuttings last Oct and they are all in bud, does this mean they will have rooted

              I was told that often the cuttings have buds before they've properly developed roots, so don't be in too much of a hurry to disturb them......

                I took some cuttings last summer and followed the advice here - Roses - taking rose cuttings | How to | Projects | BBC Gardeners' World

                I think we have a Lady Emma Hamilton, or something similar and it smells divine. I wanted to make sure we had a couple to take when we move on (rented house).

                  Well Nelson did so why shouldn't you

                  The main reasons for budding is you can get an awful lot of consistant plants off a 2ft length of rose stem ( they only need an eye or two!) where as it's a bit longer as cuttings and you can't get them all the same - some roses have different habits when grown as cuttings - but it is fun.

                  Where my dad uses to live there were loads of old briars in the hedge and one old boy used to bud all his new roses on to it come summer it was a cracking display ... all sadly gone now
