  • Hellebore seedlings

I have been given a half tray of seedlings (approx 100 !!!!) and I need to grow them on. I have nowhere in the garden to plant them out so do I put them in small pots or would they be OK in some of my spare rootrainers? Or any other suggestions would be welcome.

I pot them on into 5" (approx) pots and leave them in a quiet bit of the garden (round by the shed) for a year or so til they are big enough to plant out, Suky. So long as they are getting rained on you shouldn't have to do anything else to them.

Let them get a little bigger and the ones I have just planted in some root trainers could be yours!
Becki, they are a bit small for 5" pots, when they have grown up a bit, maybe,
I had 97 in all, some now in a seed tray (the very tiny ones) some in pots and some in rootrainers. They will all go along the side of the garden where the bulb pots, root cuttings and other such plants live. Cool, shady and hopefully they will thrive there.

Alternatively....if you have space - grow them on and go to a boot fair next spring. I'm sure they would go like hot cakes....

Suky, if they are that teeny, you could put three or four seedlings per pot, and then split them up again next year.

The local horticultural club I have just joined have a spring plant sale My Mum and I went to this years one last month, said 'we could do better than that' and joined up. Even so, there will be some to spare for fellow Grapes.
