    Galtonia viriflora

    Hello all,
    I hope there's someone out there who can advise me. My galtonia (given to me this year) has been in a pot and flowered wonderfully and now gone to seed. I tried to carefully move it and plant it out in the garden. However the flower stalk snapped off.. Oh no!!
    Do I now risk planting bulb out in the garden, or keep it dry in the shed and plant out next year.?

    Hello Kay,

    That's a lovely looking plant - I think I'll have to put it on my Xmas wish list. I've never grown it but I would be tempted to lift it and store it somewhere frost free. Plant it back out in the spring.

      Mine are planted out, but they have good drainage. If you have heavy clay they would be better lifted each year (or grown in a pot, in which case keep dry-ish over winter).

      Personally I prefer Galtonia candicans which has white flowers, as I find the green flowers of Galtonia viridiflora rather indistinct. They both grow easily from seed, so perhaps pop the broken flower stalk into a brown paper envelope until fry and the seeds drop out, and then sow them somewhere suitable.

          Thanks for your replies. I'll keep it dry and frost free this winter and hope for the best.
          I'll rescue the stalk from the recycling bin and save some seeds
