Conifers - Whats the best way to take cuttings?

I could do with a number of fast growing conifers but rather than paying for them I thought why not take a few cuttings from the many conifers in my area.

So to my question(s):

How easy is it to take cuttings of conifers?
Whats the best way?
How long do you think it would be before they are ....... 4 ft (That figure was just picked out of the air - a couple of years at least I think).

Anyway many thanks, if anyone has had any experience like this it would be great to hear how you went on.
