| I only know of 2 in someone's garden, 2 on the allotments, and 1 growing on the canal bank. None of them are very big, although I think the canal bank one would have been bigger in a less windy spot - it's noticeably bent in one direction. One of the allotment ones is the biggest at about 15 - 20 foot, the rest are 10ft at best.

| Next door's mature Bramley is just a couple of metres from my Charles Ross Step-over (and only a few more from my Egremont Russet)

| Neighbours round the corner had an Orchard, but not much of it is left now. The couple that are still there are around 3 - 4 metres in height. If I had my way, more would be going in.

| Most of the old apple orchards families had years ago are gone. I see quite a lot of new trees though which is encouraging. Fruit trees in this area seem to do better on the lower and more sheltered levels. My 'success' to date has been limited to one or two very small fruits (if I'm lucky!) but my (lower) neighbours are having great success.

| We've two that must be about 30ft, the third is a lot smaller but the same age, that's a Bramley, didn't put that in as you wanted the largest.

| I put 6-8m but that might well be an underestimation. I live near a very old orchard and some of the trees there are pretty big.

| Thought I was a bit between the devil etc. The only cultivated one I know, apart from mine, which aren't very old, is about 4 metres but there are loads of crab apples. Then I realised that they are mostly about 4 metres as well. So no prob.

| I'm very lucky living where I do surrounded by gardens with apple trees. I have four but there's dozens in adjoining gardens although I have no idea of variety. I reckon I could plant just about any type and there'd be something to pollinate it. On top of the domesticated ones there's quite a few crabs and a few escapees of indeterminate variety in hedgerows. |

| the one ive added is on our allotment site and its well over 40', its a shame cause the apples are always scabbed but apparently yearsa ago they were lovely to eat

| I have a cooker in my neighbour to the left's garden and a multi variety eater in the neighbour to my right. The largest is a Bramley just down the way. I don't have any apple tree's but then I don't need them, everyone gives me some of there's. I am tempted by having a cherry tree however, but I am waiting til somewhere has a sale. I grew up in a village and someone had a lovely orchard there filled with really old tree's, it's a shame we don't see them anymore. If I had the space I would plant a apple, plum and Pear orchard. ( Space really is the final frontier ) Izi. |
