Hi,

I have an established raspberry bed inherited from when we bought the house 3 yrs ago.

Raspberries are now shooting out some 3 feet or so from the original bed, and are about 4-10 inches high.

Obviously digging them out is a no-no as i guess the roots go back to the old bed, so can i just snip them and stick them in compost with a bit of root hormone powder etc?

Would they actually grow like that?

Otherwise they will suffer death by Hayter sooner or later...

You can take out the suckers (with some root attached) in the autumn.

Thanks TS - i'll see if i can cordon them off and keep them safe.

i suppose i should make the effort given the cost of new raspberry plants!

In my experience, raspberries grow like weeds and even if you plant sticks they will still take and grow.

I don't seem to be able to kill raspberries which makes them my kind of plant

I've taken these suckers out below ground at this time of year before when they were growing in the wrong place and surplus to my needs. Take as much root as you can find without harming the 'parent'.

Gave them to a friend who didn't plant them up immediately but did place in a bucket of water for a few days. They took and fruited enough for a single person the same year.

In my experience they're pretty indestructible and akin to weeds in their persistence.

I moved my raspberries when I got my plot as they were too close to the path, They keep coming up and I remove them with a bit of root attached if I can, pop them into a pot with compost and they have taken.

Can also do it with cultivated blackeberries and tayberries or many of the other hybrids.

As long as there is some roots attached and they are watered well for a couple of weeks they will survive.

we got given some raspberry plants on the allotment, we planted them and cut them back, as an experiment we put the cuttings in a jar o water and even tho they haven't rooted we do have a few fruit forming, i think thats what you call hydroponics
