  • Lanky cherry tree

Help please, I am new to trees and I am aware that it is very important to get it right at the outset!
I bought a dwarf cherry tree from a garden centre last year.
I think it must have had over enriched compost or something, as during the summer the main upwards growth shot up and produced a set of MASSIVE leaves. The 3 lower branches grew at a normal rate and had normal leaves.
I have repotted it into ordinary compost with some soil and sand.
It is rather a weird shape with 3 low branches and a very, tall single upward.
I want to move it out of it's pot and into it's permanent position now. What should I do to prepare it for the future. Or is this one "weird for life"?

    Do you have any photographs?
Feed the soil, not the plants.
    (helps if you have cluckies)

Sounds like the main leader should be pruned which will arrest upward growth and encourage side shoots below. I'm no expert though. See what others have to say.
